Crime drops in Tshwane north, but still worrying
The Tshwane north cluster, in general, is reportedly grappling with police and vehicle shortages.
Various police stations in the Tshwane north cluster have reported an overall drop in crime for the past financial year.
This is according to statistics released by police minister Bheki Cele in parliament this week.
A total of 22 murders were reported at the Soshanguve police station in the 2017/18 period, compared to 30 in 2016/18.

Sexual offences dropped from 121 to 107, while rape cases declined from 106 to 93.
At Ga-Rankuwa police station, murder figures dropped from 14 to 11.
Loate police station saw a decline in murder cases from 43 to 38.
Sexual offences also dropped from 114 to 109, while rape cases dropped from 104 to 102.
At Mabopane police station, the murder rate stayed the same at 17.
At Rietgat police, murder cases also stayed the same at 47.
Temba police station recorded a slight decrease of murder cases from 63 the previous year to 60 in the current year.

Sexual offences in this precinct also dropped from 211 to 204, while carjacking decreased from 135 to 97.
In Hammanskraal, murder also decreased from 13 to 11, while sexual offences fell from 59 to 53.
Cases of attempted murder decreased from 18 to 11, while rape cases dropped from 46 to 40.
Despite this, crime figures remained a cause for concern, a local CPF told Rekord.
“Police still need to step up their efforts in the fight against crime,” Loate policing precinct CPF chairperson Moses Matlou said.
Matlou cited a lack of resources as a major factor crippling effective policing.
He said the Tshwane north cluster, in general, is grappling with police and vehicle shortages. This results in low staff morale‚ which in turn cripples the police’s ability to adequately serve the community.

He said police, and Loate SAPS, in particular, were not using the volunteers/patrollers adequately.
“We have a team of patrollers who are ready to help the police, but it would seem some senior police officers do not want us to help them,” he said.
He said Loate station was grappling with a dire shortage of vehicles.
