The police in the north of Pretoria are investigating an armed robbery and ATM bombing which took place at a petrol station around midnight on Friday evening.
The petrol station is on the corner of Hornsnek and Brits roads in Akasia.
Police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said the four robbers involved in the crime stopped their vehicle in front of the petrol station’s shop at approximately 23:58.
“Three men, two of who were armed with AK-47 rifles, entered the shop while the fourth stayed behind in the vehicle,” said Nkoadi.
The robbers then used explosives to bomb the ATM inside the shop, according to Nkoadi.
“They made off with an undisclosed amount of money.”
They fled the scene in a white BMW with an unknown registration number.
“Fuel attendants were held at gunpoint during the bombing but none were injured,” Nkoadi said.
Reports that one of the attendants was taken by the robbers and forced to drink an unknown substance could not be confirmed by police.
“During the investigation it was found that the dye stain device inside the ATM had exploded. All the money taken had in all likelihood been stained,” said Nkoadi.
Petrol station management would not provide comment.
