Three female metro police officers were arrested on Friday afternoon for taking a bribe in the west of Pretoria.
The arrest was made after a motorist who had been pressured into bribing the officers reported the incident to the authorities.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the motorist was stopped by the officers after allegedly driving onto the oncoming traffic.
“Instead of issuing a fine the three officers allegedly demanded money from the motorist,” said Mahamba.
After taking the cash the officers left but the motorist managed to take down their vehicle registration number, said Mahamba.
“He then went to the metro police offices to report the incident where he was immediately assisted.”
Mahamba said an internal investigation unit located the officers and after thorough questioning arrested the three officers for bribery and corruption.
“The officers, aged between 25 and 35, are currently detained at a local police station and will appear in court soon.”
He said besides the court case the officers would also face an internal disciplinary action.
“As a department we promote zero tolerance to corruption and we will not hesitate to arrest and oust officers who are corrupt.”
The motorist has been applauded for reporting the incident and Mahamba called on all to refrain from offering money to officers and to report officers who demanded money.
