Tshwane central police hope the high number of arrests for shoplifting and theft will serve as a warning to others not to commit these types of crimes.
24 of the total 67 arrests made by police in the cluster over the weekend were in relation to these crime.
Central police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the arrests were part of ongoing operations to increase police visibility.
“High police and security visibility at malls and shopping centres make it impossible for these offenders to get away,” said Weilbach.
The cluster, which includes Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Lyttelton, Sunnyside, Silverton, Pretoria Moot and Villieria police stations, is also targeting contact, property and drug-related crimes.
Weilbach said several operations were being held across the metro to disrupt and discouraged these illegal activities.
“A total of 15 arrests over the weekend were made for drug-related crimes,” she said.
During joint roadblock and stop-and-search operations, six motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
With the festive season fast approaching, said Weilbach, the police wanted to ensure that all the communities in the central cluster felt and were safe.
Other arrests included six arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods, two for possession of stolen motor vehicles, one for attempted theft of motor vehicle, one for possession of equipment used to break into cars and one for housebreaking and theft.
“All those arrested will appear in the Hatfield Community and Pretoria Magistrate’s Court respectively on Monday,” said Weilbach.
