The two police officers accused of murdering Tshwane University of Technology student Katlego Monareng were granted R2 000 bail each by the Soshanguve magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
Captain Joseph Rapoo(51) and Constable John Slender (40), both stationed in and residents of Soshanguve, were arrested by the independent police investigative directorate (IPID) on Monday.
“The arrest follows a shooting incident in August at TUT (Soshanguve campus),” IPID’s spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.
Monareng was shot and killed when police officers opened fire with R5 rifles to disperse a crowd of apparently unruly students who had blockaded the entrance and pelted law enforcement officers and their vehicles with stones.
Prior to the shooting, violence broke out at the university when students reacted to allegations of the SRC elections being rigged.
The university was marred by a series of protests in a quest for #JusticeForKatlego prior to activities being suspended for several weeks at its Soshanguve north and south campuses.
TUT resumed with activities on 8 October 2018.
