Revamped Church Square reopened

The newly revamped Church Square with new modern lighting and beautiful decorating vegetation has been reopened.

Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga reopened the famous Pretoria Central landmark on Friday.

The square is now paved, with new modern lighting and beautiful decorating vegetation.

Msimanga was joined by Tshwane MMC for roads and transport Sheila Senkubuge and Gauteng MEC for roads and transport Ismail Vadi.

Senkubuge said the square still presented one of the best tourist attractions for both local and international tourists.

She said R28 million was spent on the project which took two years to finish.

Msimanga said now that phase one of the project has been completed, the precinct of the square would be declared car-free and would only accommodate city buses.

“We want to encourage the non-motorised traffic in that area and make sure that the safety aspect is enhanced,” he said.

“Other objectives of the project are to preserve and showcase the heritage history of Church Square by incorporating all the historic occasions within the square and surroundings, to enable an environment that will catalyse further economic development in the square,” Msimanga said.

Vadi said people needed to understand that the city was for the people, not for cars.

He encouraged people to park their cars somewhere in the city and make use of public transport.
