VIDEO: Pretoria Boys High learners help less privileged
The aim of the drive “was to see every child at these orphanages enjoy and celebrate Christmas."
A Pretoria Boys High club is involved with various outreach programmes to help the less privileged.
Penny Vlag, who helps organise some projects, said the school usually collected stationery at the beginning of the year to help the less privileged as the school year started.
“We also collect warm blankets and clothes for the winter season for the less privileged. We collect can food and so much more,” she said.

She said the outreach club also regularly visited old age homes, orphanages and refugee camps in Sunnyside and Kalafong, where it helped children with homework and other educational needs.
Vlag said the learners had collected more than 200 boxes.
“The staff has also collected a whole lot of boxes on their own as they have joined in the Christmas drive.”
She said the school started a Christmas gifting drive this year during which it would support a squatter camp in Kameelfontein.

She said the orphanages included Mohau Centre, Kingdom Life Children Centre and Bramley children’s home.
Vlag said the aim of the drive “was to see every child at these orphanages enjoy and celebrate Christmas”.
She said the outreach club members were very driven and sometimes competed to see which school boarding house or individual could bring in the most stationery or cans.

Vlag said the school was divided into 10 houses and each house had five groups, separated by their grades.
She said in the five groups there were leaders who drove these initiatives and were doing exceptionally well as parents and teachers were not too involved in these projects.
She said she was so happy to see parents involved in these extracurricular events.
Vlag said the school was also trying to educate learners about issues such as rape as they had recently also given handbags with goodies and other feminine products to rape victims.
