VIDEO: Secure your home against fire before going on holiday

“People should always remember to switch off and unplug electronic equipment before leaving their homes.”

The Sinoville Firefighters Association (SFFA) urged residents to fire-proof their homes before going away on holiday.

SFFA spokesperson Zenobia Loock-Du Plessis said fire hazards were often overlooked and preventative measures ignored.

“It’s that time of the year when we’re in the holiday spirit and less likely to pay attention to the dangers in and around our homes,” said Loock-Du Plessis.

“But it is exactly this time of the year that we need to make sure our homes are safe against fires.”

Thatch roofs, garden refuse and low hanging tree branches were potential fire risks, she said.

“Braai areas especially are a problem. Smouldering coals from fires left to burn out is often the cause of fires at homes.”

Loock-Du Plessis said safety inside homes and garages was also very important.

“People should always remember to switch off and unplug electronic equipment before leaving their homes.”

“People’s garages often contain some of the most flammable liquids and materials you can find,” Loock-Du Plessis said.

Paint, chlorine used in swimming pools, generators, vehicles and fuel containers were all very flammable, she reminded.

“Chemicals should never be stored in large quantities in or outside garages and homes.”

Loock-Du Plessis said it was important for people to inform domestic workers and gardeners about the safe the use and storage of flammable materials.

“When people leave on holiday they should always inform their neighbours or people they can trust,” said Loock-Du Plessis.

“Basic safety awareness and the knowledge of what to do when fires break out can save homes and lives.”

Loock-Du Plessis invited residents in the north of Pretoria to join up and become members of their nearest firefighting association.
