A 37-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning by the police canine unit, following a botched armed house robbery in Monument Park.
The attempted robbery occurred at around 02:00 in the morning at a local residence, where the suspect pointed a firearm at the residents, according to police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
However, the owner of the property was able to activate a panic button and alert emergency services of the situation.
“A search for the suspect immediately began,” said Miller.
“During the search, the suspect was spotted running down a road and Pretoria canine unit members were able to catch him.”

Miller said the suspect produced his firearm and tried to shoot at his pursuers.
“The police officers were, however, able to wrestle and take the firearm from the suspect.”
Miller said the SAPS would like to thank all the officers involved who ensured that this dangerous suspect was apprehended.
The man would be facing charges of attempted house robbery; attempted murder; pointing of firearm; possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of burglary equipment.

Further investigations are ongoing to determine whether he could be linked to other burglary cases in the area.
“It is only by working together as a team, security companies, SAPS, TMPD, CPF and community that we were able to make sure that this arrest was made,” said Miller.
