More than 100 volunteers clean up Hennops River
“They dragged more than 200 bags of rubbish from the heavily polluted river.”
More than a hundred people helped to clean up the heavily polluted Hennops River in Centurion on Saturday.
The initiative was organised by Fresh (Fountain River Environmental Sanctuary Hennops), an NGO whose main focus is to clean up South Africa’s rivers, dams and water ways.
Fresh spokesperson Willem Snyman said the river’s flow was being halted by litter, also affecting its eco system.

“There were more than a hundred volunteers, removing plastics that filled up over 200 rubbish bags,” he said.
“This is probably the cleanest this area has been in years.”
He said the area around the old bridge was cleaned of most plastics and debris that had piled up and got stuck in the trees, improving the river’s flow.
Fifty litres of effective micro-organisms was also poured into the river at stagnant areas to dissolve sludge, and was seen “bubbling in a healthy way”.

The initiative also saw 23 trees being planted in the area, 10 of which were large and had started to create a “forest effect”.
Snyman said this would not be the last of the initiative.
“Already we’re planning the next steps; making a waterfall pool in the clean wetland stream where one could even swim and where the animal life, which has been wiped out, can be brought back, to replant and restore this fountain wetland.”

He said there was also a plan to make the park pristine again and turn it into a large wildlife sanctuary.
“Congratulations to everyone on a job well done,” said Snyman.
“The spirit of light and positive action is driving away the chaos of pollution.”
