Police arrested more than 60 people for various crimes during a crime prevention operation this weekend.
The arrests were made in seven station areas, namely Pretoria Moot, Silverton, Villieria, Garstfontein, Lyttelton, Sunnyside and Brooklyn.
The operations were focused specifically on violence against women and children, according to police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt,
Operations also focused on property and drug-related crimes, unlicensed fire arms, and traffic offences such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Road blocks, as well as stop-and-searches, resulted in 14 people being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

This according to Breedt was the offence with the highest number of arrests.
“Six people were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; two were arrested for drug-related, while eight were arrested for theft common, one for rape and one for possession of child pornography.”
He said five others were arrested for crimes such as theft, malicious damage to property, fraud, and road traffic violations such as driving without a license.
“We also swooped on public areas and shopping centres and 29 arrests were made for various minor crimes such as, consuming alcohol in a public place and pedestrian source of danger,” he said.
During a separate operation, carried out in the Sunnyside Precinct on Wednesday, 21 spaza shops were found to have been operating without trading licenses.
The operation involved a multi-disciplinary team consisting of 73 officers and members from various law enforcement agencies. All 21 shops were issued with fines.

“One pub in particular was closed and the liquor confiscated after it came to light that the owner was not in possession of a valid liquor license.”
“This particular owner was issued an R1 500 fine.”
All those arrested will appear on Monday in the Hatfield court and Pretoria magistrate’s court, respectively.
Communities are once again urged to report any suspicious activities, persons, or vehicles in their residential area by phoning the 10111 emergency number.
“Information regarding crime or suspicious drug activity can be given to police anonymously by phoning 08600-10111 or sending an SMS to 32211,” Breedt said.
