Two metro employees were arrested for cable theft in the Pretoria CBD on Wednesday afternoon.
The alleged thieves were arrested following a tip-off that occupants of a grey Mercedes Benz were vandalising electricity substations, said metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.
“Officers located the vehicle in the parking area of a substation in Scheiding Street in the CBD,” said Mahamba.

“They heard people working inside the substation. When they went in to investigate, two men were found ripping out cables.”
“Upon questioning, the two men claimed they were employed by the City of Tshwane and were there on official duty.”
Upon investaging, the officers found that one of the men was indeed a city employee, but was not authorised to perform such actions, he said.
Mahamba said one of the suspects was “a well-known local DJ”.

The two men will appear in court soon.
“Well done to the officers for their swift response and for the tip-off from a concerned citizen,” said Mahamba.
“Together we can fight cable theft in Tshwane.”
