A suspected cable thief is under police guard in hospital after he was electrocuted in Pretoria West on Thursday morning.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the officers (TMPD) were tipped off around 07:00 on Thursday about four people digging cables behind the Pretoria West Hospital.
“While the officers were on their way, they were told that three suspects were fleeing from the scene and one suspect was walking to the hospital,” he said.
The officers rushed to the hospital where nurses confirmed that one man had walked in with severe burn wounds.

“The suspect is now receiving treatment in the hospital but is in police custody. Tshwane metro police are continuing their search for the other three suspects.”
Mahamba said the incident should also be a lesson to people who steal cables.
“Cable theft does not only cause electricity outages but also poses a serious danger to community members because of the live wires that are left hanging.”
“We commend community members who are working together with us to curb this serious crime. Together we will continue to fight cable theft in Tshwane,” he said.
