Slain Matwetwe film lead actor Sibusiso Khwinana apparently chased after one of the men who stole his phone before succumbing to his fatal stab wounds in the city centre on Friday evening.
It was understood the 25-year-old was at the Sterland mall for a screening of the movie in which he played the role of Lefa alongside Papi, played by Tebatso Mashishi.
He was attacked as he left the centre.
“One of the suspects grabbed his phone whereafter Mr Khwinana chased him and a fight ensued,” Sterland mall general manager Rentia van Rooyen said.
Van Rooyen said the 25-year-old actor was approached by three people in Pretorius Street when he exited the mall before 23:00.
Khwinana was stabbed to death shortly afterwards.

“An ambulance arrived shortly thereafter and the victim was declared dead at the scene, before midnight,” Van Rooyen said.
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the police were only aware of one perpetrator but were not ruling out the possibility of there being more.
“We urge people with information to come forward,” he said.
He said the police were investigating a murder and robbery docket.
Family spokesperson Khalo Khwinana told Rekord the family was struggling to cope and come to terms with the shocking death.

She said there would be a meeting later in the day to finalise the venue for the memorial and burial services scheduled to take place at the Tshwane University of Technology campuses on Thursday and Saturday.
