VIDEO: ANC, Centurion councillor lay criminal charges against each other

The councillor is accused of removing ANC posters from ward 48.

An apparent spat between two Tshwane ward councillors in Centurion has led to two separate criminal cases being opened at the Wierdaburg police station this week.

The removal of posters appears to be at the centre of the incident between Ward 48 councillor Kingsley Wakelin and ANC Tshwane spokesperson Lesego Makhubela.

The altercation took place on Monday afternoon.

Makhubela posted two videos on social media of the incident between himself and Wakelin.

Tshwane ANC chairperson Kgosi Maepa addressed members of the media outside the police station on Wednesday morning.

“We as the ANC in Tshwane are here to formally lay criminal charges against Wakelin,” said Maepa.

“Wakelin was seen by the chairperson of the ANC youth league in Tshwane, Lesego Makhubela removing posters of political parties.

“We believe he has undermined the electoral act so we are here to submit our affidavit.”

The Tshwane ANC is calling for the immediate removal of Wakelin as councillor.

However, the DA has in turn laid its own criminal case against Makhubela.

Tshwane DA deputy chief whip Crezane Bosch together with Wakelin also opened a case at the Wierdabrug police.

The case includes charges of intimidation, assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm and crimen injuria.

According to Bosch, Wakelin and his daughter embarked on a clean-up operation in his ward to remove illegal posters.

“Wakelin had applied for permission from Tshwane metro to remove these illegal posters in his ward,” said Bosch.

“Makhubela attempted to assault Wakelin for removing the illegal posters alleging that he is removing ANC election posters.”

Wakelin also contacted the Tshwane metro police for assistance, said Bosch.

“He, just like any other resident, has the right to apply for permission to remove illegal advertisement,” he said.

“There are many illegal advertisements that obstruct road signs, traffic lights and the DA cannot be intimidated by the ANC and allow lawlessness to flourish in our suburbs.”

Bosch said the DA would continue to monitor the progress of this case and ensure Makhubela faces the full might of the law.
