The "black tie, dress to impress" themed event aimed to raise funds for the centre which provides a safe haven for mentally ill people.

Eersterust residents came out in their finest haute couture to the Cinderella ball hosted by the Shalom community care centre on Friday.

The black tie, dress-to-impress-themed event aimed to raise funds for the centre which provides a safe haven for people with mental illnesses.

The event was held at the civic centre.

Organiser and centre chief operations officer Heidi Steenkamp said the Shalom centre aimed to provide “world-class” care in a safe environment for people who lived with mental illnesses and support their families.

“We want to create awareness and educate people about mental health and illness as well as support their families. We also aim to promote healthy living,” she said.

Steenkamp said the founder of the centre saw how people with mental illnesses wandered around the streets of Eersterust and wanted to do something to address the matter.

The centre cared for between 40 to 50 adults daily.

“We have care workers and volunteers who are dedicated to the programme and are available to work with the participants to improve their skills.”

Steenkamp said those willing to contribute to the centre could do so through volunteering, donating cleaning supplies and toiletries along with first-aid equipment and clothing.
