Burst pipe nuisance for east residents

“We have pleaded with the Tshwane metro to fix the pipe, but they just bring a truck full of soil to cover the area.”

Thousands of litres of water are wasted almost every day in Mamelodi East, Extension 5.

The residents of Poo and Padi streets in Extension 5 blamed the city of Tshwane and their local ward councillor Collen Marishane for not taking them seriously when they reported the burst pipe years ago.

Otynyel Khosa said her home occasionally flooded.

“We have reported the matter to the municipality and also to our councillor, but they all failed to act.”

“We have pleaded with the Tshwane metro to fix the pipe, but they just bring a truck full of soil to cover the area.”

“The problem does not go away and when we asked why they can’t dig up the hole and look for the problem or maybe fix the pipe leaking from the ground we are told that they don’t have resources to fix the pipe.”

“Furthermore, we were told that the RDP houses were not supposed to be built in that area.”

Khosa said the only way to fix a leaking pipe was to replace it.

Koketso Koka said he was worried for the safety of small children in the area who sometimes drink the water.

He said Padi and Poo streets are not safe for children and in summer there’s always a mosquito infestation.

Koka said he suspects that the RDP houses in Extension 5 might have been built on a wetland and the Tshwane metro is afraid to tell the residents.

The residents pleaded with Marishane to do something about the pipe before the election or else they will not vote.

Marishane was yet to comment.
