Animal Ambulance hosts movie night with dogs

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than to spend time with these lovely animals."

What better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the world’s most iconic movies, Forrest Gump, than to watch it, popcorn in hand, cuddled by dozens of lovable dogs.

This is an event that took place on Saturday evening at Animal Ambulance, an emergency centre and shelter for sick, abused or abandoned animals.

“Currently we have 166 dogs on this plot, along with cows, cats and so many more. Everything revolves around these animals. They are loving, caring, and they deserve the best treatment. We decided to host a movie night under the stars, not only to raise some much needed funds for Animal Ambulance, but to treat our dogs and dog lovers to something different,” says owner Maria Phelan.

People arrived just before sunset, only to be treated to the warm embrace of all the dogs, eager and excited for what was to come.

“We adore animals in general, but dogs are our favourite. Why not help out and spend an evening with all these beautiful dogs,” says couple Ofure Ayere and Heoluwa Adeburji, who were very happy to be at the movie night.

13-year-old John-Luc Brown was also in attendance, celebrating his 13th birthday at the shelter.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than to spend time with these lovely animals,” he said.

Rekord earlier reported on an incident of animal theft that took place at Animal Ambulance in February, when goats and sheep were stolen from the plot, early on a Thursday morning.

Volunteer Janine Human told Rekord that the thieves were very meticulous in their act as they managed to get past all alarms, cameras and other security measures that were all in working order.

After raising the alarm on social media, a potential eye witness contacted the shelter saying that she had seen a white Toyota bakkie with a trailer filled with goats and sheep, drive on the N1 south, just after Lynnwood Road.

“Unfortunately nothing has come of that although we have had numerous tipoffs, nothing turned out to be viable,” Maria explained.
