UPDATE: Tshwane metro still urging residents to collect title deeds

The metro's housing department was also said to be in the process of sourcing expanded public works programme workers to verify that the houses for which title deeds have not been collected were occupied.

The Tshwane metro has reminded RDP housing beneficiaries to collect their title deeds that have been sitting uncollected for a month already.

“The non-collection of title deeds is, unfortunately, a national problem,” spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said.

However, he added provincial and national government were working towards determining remedial action to deal with this “complex matter”.

The metro’s ongoing plans to encourage beneficiaries to collect their title deeds included sending letters on a regular basis.

“Ward councillors are also requested to encourage people to collect their title deeds,” Mashigo said.

The metro’s housing department was also said to be in the process of sourcing expanded public works programme workers to verify that the houses for which title deeds have not been collected were occupied.

“This will be done to locate the whereabouts of the registered owner and/or the reason for the non-collection thereof,” Mashigo explained.

Last month, the metro called on beneficiaries to collect the more than 9 000 uncollected deeds.

“The City is currently sitting with over 9 000 uncollected title deeds, which we urge the rightful beneficiaries to collect,” human settlements MMC Mandla Nkomo said.

“We have, in the past, explored several methods of communication such as letters, house-to-house visits, consumer education workshops, word-of-mouth and ward councillors’ mass meetings, to urge beneficiaries to collect their title deeds.

“However, not all of them came forward.”

He said the metro appealed to beneficiaries to collect deeds so they could attain security of tenure of their property.
