Two life terms for man who raped girls
Winners Boitshepo Makgoba was convicted on two counts of rape and sentenced by the Temba Magistrate’s Court. His name will also be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to two life terms for raping two teenage girls in separate incidents in Temba and Hammanskraal in 2017.
Winners Boitshepo Makgoba was convicted on two counts of rape and sentenced by the Temba Magistrate’s Court on August 26.
The court ordered that the two life term sentences run concurrently.
The case dates back to April 27, 2017, when the two victims, who were 13 and 14 years old at the time, encountered Makgoba near Jubilee Mall at about 16:30.
According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, Makgoba gave the girls juice to drink. After they became dizzy, he allegedly took them to a lodge in Leboneng, where he gave them alcohol.
He then rented a room for R150 and took one of the girls inside, where he raped her.
Makgoba and the victims later proceeded to the bushes in Kanana, where the second girl was raped before the two victims were left there.
The girls subsequently reported the rapes to their sister, who opened a rape case at Hammanskraal SAPS.
Van Dyk said the investigation was assigned to Detective Sergeant Mapyane of the Temba Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
“The detective gathered evidence from the different crime scenes, which helped link Makgoba to the offences.
“On May 1, 2017, about 09:00, police traced Makgoba to his home in Kekana Gardens, Hammanskraal, where he was arrested and detained,” he said.
Van Dyk said the conviction demonstrated the importance of thorough investigations in cases involving vulnerable victims.
“Detective Sergeant Mapyane showed dedication and hard work in ensuring that all the evidence was collected and that the perpetrator was brought to justice,” said Van Dyk.
Following his conviction, Makgoba was also ordered to have his name entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
He was declared unsuitable to work with children and unfit to possess a firearm.
Temba SAPS station commander Brigadier Johannes Tau welcomed the sentence and praised the investigating officer for her commitment to securing justice for the victims.
