Two men are to face charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to state property after a shootout and chase with the police over the weekend.
The two suspects, aged between 30 and 35, would face charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, malicious damage to state property and possession of a stolen vehicle, Tshwane flying squad spokesperson Constable Buhle Rahatji said.
She said the duo were arrested in Majaneng, Hammanskraal after officers on patrol spotted them on the main road near the Q4 Mashego garage.
“The suspects were trying to hijack a bakkie from the owner.”

A chase between them and the police then ensued when the men attempted to flee the scene by getting into the Mercedes Benz they were driving in.
“Upon realising that members were following them, the suspects opened fire on the officers and they retaliated,” Rahatji said.
“The suspects lost control of the vehicle and drove into a nearby yard.”
The duo was then arrested and two pistols recovered.
“One of the suspects was wounded during the shootout,” she added.

Rahatji said no additional injuries were recorded but the police vehicle was damaged.
“Although investigations are continuing, preliminary reports have revealed that the white Mercedes Benz used as the getaway car was reported stolen in a house robbery in Akasia.”
The duo was set to appear in the Hammanskraal Magistrate’s Court soon.
