NEWSFLASH: Pap, chicken feet ‘land 25 west learners in hospital’

“They said they purchased the food from the canteen.”

At least 25 Atteridgeville high school learners in the west of Pretoria were taken to hospital on Thursday complaining of diarrhoea.

“The 25 matriculants were rushed to hospital after they all complained of diarrhoea,” Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said.

He said the learners told paramedics they ate pap and chicken feet from the Edward Phatudi Secondary School canteen on Wednesday.

“They said they purchased the food from the canteen,” Mabaso said.

Of the 25 leaners aged between 17 and 20, 21 were taken to the Kalafong hospital while the other four were rushed to the Pretoria West hospital.

Mabaso said environmental health and health services officials were dispatched to the school.

“They will conduct an investigation,” he said.

Atteridgeville police spokesperson Mapula Rikhotso confirmed police were called to the scene and were monitoring the situation.

“It is not yet clear to police what the source of the poisoning was,” Rikhotso said.
