Salvokop little ones participate in clean-up campaign
Tshwane Leadership Foundation's Joel Mayephu said the clean-up was to make the Salvokop community learners aware and educate them about the effects of air pollution, waste and smoking.
More than 800 children as young as seven were taken out in groups to clean the Salvokop area as part of a clean-up campaign on Friday.
The children went around the area cleaning up their schools and neighbourhood along with various stakeholders.
Tshwane Leadership Foundation’s Joel Mayephu said the clean-up was to make the Salvokop community learners aware and educate them about the effects of air pollution, waste and smoking.

The theme for this year’s campaign was #BeatAirPollution.
“This was the ninth annual clean-up campaign event,” said Mayephu.
“Seventy Inkululeko Day Care Centre preschool learners and 800 Jopie Fourie Primary school learners and community members attended.”
Mayephu said the aim of the clean-up was to make participants aware of their actions on the environment and neighbourhood as well as take ownership of their immediate environments on a daily basis.
He said each participant needed to be held accountable for the reckless dumping and disposing of waste everywhere.
Head of department of Joupie Fourie Primary, Bridget Ford said the day was very successful as the children were very excited and enjoyed themselves.

She said the stakeholders came out in full force and educated the children.
“It is sad that we have to go out into the area and clean it though,” added Ford.
Ford said she invited community members to join them.
Mayephu said the issue of the community not taking part was soon to change.
“We have also resolved to organise another event which will mainly focus on the Salvokop Community on a Saturday to involve more community members.”
Food was served to everyone who helped to clean and the children enjoyed performances held at the end of the day.
