The theft of security beams was a big headache for authorities in Centurion and residents failing to report these crimes to the police might be helping criminals get away with it.
“While we have noted a decrease in the theft of gate motors, the theft of security beams are on the rise,” said Monitor Net spokesperson JP le Roux.
Le Roux said last weekend as many as eight beams were stolen from three different properties.
“These thefts tend to happen in areas such as Doringkloof, Lyttelton, Hennopspark, Clubview and the Centurion CBD,” said Le Roux.

“And they tend to happen quick – we have reports of criminals stealing a beam in under 20 seconds.”
Le Roux said residents could protect their property with a special bracket fitted over the beam.
“The bracket is bolted to the wall and cannot be removed easily,” he said.
“The beam is so secure that criminals do not even attempt to steal it if the bracket is fitted.”
But the prevention of these crimes might be hampered by the reluctance of residents to open a theft case.
the Lyttelton police had noticed an increase in the crimes but not as a result of cases reported.
“We have heard rumours of increases in these crimes through our various partnerships and interactions with security companies and the CPF,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

“Unfortunately, cases aren’t opened so it is impossible to know where the tendencies and hotspots are.”
With the police left in the dark, the security beam thieves are free to go about their business.
“That is why it is important to report all crimes, including attempts,” Miller said.
“This includes reporting to security companies and the local CPF. They will then inform the sector manager, who can keep the police informed of crime trends.
Miller said residents may report crimes to their nearest police station or alternatively on 10111.
