Lights, cleaning the order of the day at Moot stream

“More and more people shelter in the green areas during winter."

A thorn in the side for many Moot residents is being cleaned

According to local ward councilor Elmarie Linde, the metro had begun cleaning up the stream that flows through a large part of the area.

She said the clean-up started last week in Waverley and in her ward earlier this week.

“Especially during winter time, there are more and more people looking for shelter in open fields and other green areas,” she said.

“It is also known that people are looking for shelter especially in such areas because it is close to the water.”

Linde said the stream in the Moot has again become a target for homeless people because they felt safe there.

“But the frustration is that they cause damage to the green area,” she said.

“They make open fires there and leave their rubbish behind.”

She said another problem for the metro was the informal recyclers who used a field near the stream.

“They go there with their trolleys and leave the rest of the mess they don’t need behind,” she said.

The stream has in the past been cleaned by several interested parties, such as AfriForum neighbourhood watch.

Resident and AfriForum East Moot neighbourhood watch chairman Andries Opperman said he appreciated action by the metro.

“It’s really essential that the stream stays clean because it has such a big impact on the community,” he said.

He said the neighbourhood watch also arranged, in conjunction with the metro, that four lights in Cunningham Avenue be erected to ensure light reached the stream.

The lights were sponsored by the community and AfriForum.

“We also got sponsors for six other lights,” he says.

“We are convinced that more light in the stream and maintenance of the area will drastically reduce crime.”
