Business robbers open fire at Centurion security officer

“Our man managed to scare off the remaining group who fled the scene in a second vehicle.”

A Centurion reaction officer escaped with only a laceration above his eye after he was shot at in Heuweloord during a botched business robbery on Thursday afternoon.

The robbery took place around 18:00, on the corner of Apiesdoring Drive and Naaldenhout Avenue.

The Monitor Net security officer had been patrolling the area in his vehicle when a group of men in a vehicle arrived at the scene.

One of the men in the vehicle approached the officer and started shooting at him, according to Monitor Net spokesperson JP le Roux.

“The officer, seeing the suspect approaching him, returned fire,” said Le Roux.

“The suspect ran back to the vehicle and it sped off.”

The officer then inspected a nearby business which was being robbed by another group of men.

“Our man managed to scare off the remaining group who fled the scene in a second vehicle,” said Le Roux.

“They managed to take only two cellphones.”

Once all the robbers had left the officer called for medical assistance.

“Initially it was suspected he had been shot but on closer inspection it was found that the laceration was from a piece of glass.

“It had shattered in his own vehicle during the shooting.”

He was taken to hospital where further scans cleared him of any major injuries.

The officer has been praised for his vigilance which led to prevention of the business robbery.

A case of business robbery and attempted murder has been opened with police, according to Le Roux.

Wierdabrug police confirmed a case of business robbery had been opened but had yet to confirm the attempted murder.
