UPDATE: Two released on bail after attack on north cop

The main accusted in the GBH case which left a police officer badly injured will remain behind bars.

Two of the three people suspected of an attack on a police officer from the Sinoville police station at a local bar in June were released on R1 000 bail each on Friday.

The third and main suspect in the case was, however, remanded in custody and will only hear his fate on 9 July when he appears in court again.

Cindy Engelbrecht (26) and Jacques van der Merwe (32) spent 10 days behind bars before being released on bail, while Francois Leibrandt (24) will return to the Newlock Correctional Services until next week, when Magistrate Kahn will decide whether he will be released on bail.

The trio was arrested last week after they allegedly attacked an off-duty constable, Leon Mentz, and his brother at Die Kantoor on 22 June.

Leibrandt has also switched attorneys since his first appearance and was represented by Advocate Kock, who read Leibrandt’s affidavit in court as part as his bail application.

Kock argued his client should be released on bail because he works for himself and has employees to pay. He further suggested that Leibrandt be granted bail as he is not a danger to society.

A statement submitted by the Sinoville CPF as well as a statement handed in by the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Naidoo, strongly disagreed with the defence.

Leibrandt has three cases pending and was out on bail during the attack on Mentz and his brother.

Leibrandt was released on bail two days before the assault.

The pending cases against Leibrandt include assault, assault with intent to do grievously bodily harm and attempted murder.
