UPDATE: Centurion security officer hurt in shootout discharged

“He is extremely grateful to have survived the attack on him by armed robbers.”

A security officer, who was injured by a shard of glass from his own vehicle during a shootout with would-be business robbers, was discharged from hospital on Friday.

“Response officer Michael ‘Specs’ Dikhotse is extremely grateful to have survived the attack on him by armed robbers in Heuweloord on Thursday,” Monitor Net said in a statement.

“Dikhotse was patrolling in the area when a group of men arrived at the scene,” according to Monitor Net spokesperson JP le Roux.

He returned fire after he saw one of the men approaching and shooting at him.

“The suspect ran back to the vehicle and sped off,” Le Roux added.

Dikhotse then inspected a nearby business, which was being robbed by another group of men.

“He managed to scare off the remaining group who fled the scene in a second vehicle.”

“They only managed to take two cellphones,” said Le Roux.

It was initially thought Dikhotse was shot, but closer inspection revealed it was a laceration from a piece of glass.

“It had shattered from his own vehicle during the shooting,” Le Roux said.

On Friday, Wierdabrug police confirmed a case of business robbery had been opened but were yet to confirm whether an attempted murder case had been opened.
