Hoërskool Centurion welcomed their new principal in Roman themed-fashion on Tuesday.
Dressed as Julius Caesar, Johan Koekemoer adamantly proclaimed: “I am not a ‘dictator’.”
He instead chose Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” to usher learners into the third semester.
After arriving at the school by helicopter, Koekemoer explained his dream for the school by pointing out his own shortcomings as a learner when he was still at school.

“I was never a superstar learner,” he said.
“I had to work extra hard to excel academically. I never wrote the best essays and, even though I loved sport, I was never very good at it.”
Koekemoer said he had spent school plays as either a tree or a pot plant.
“I never became head boy or the captain of the rugby field,” he said.
“And I did not leave school a legend.”
Instead, Koekemoer said, he relied on his passion and drive for education.

“I am enthusiastic and I give it my all, even if it is not always good enough.
“And if someone as average as me can become the principal of this school, imagine what you can become.”
Looking at the learners seated on the pavilion, Koekemoer encouraged each of them to do his or her best.
“I have big dreams for this school and for each and every one of you,” he said.
“I do not expect the impossible, only that you will be honest with yourself and give it your best.
“I will lead from the front, but I need each and every one of you to walk this journey with me.”
As the school’s flag was raised, Koekemoer was officially welcomed to the school by the learners singing the school anthem.
