Home-made speed bump fixed

Unmarked DIY speed bump which had residents seeing red has been removed.

A “home-made” speed bump in Earl Steet in Pretoria North has been flattened and the road repaired this week.

This follows after local residents complained to Rekord about the unmarked speed bump damaging their cars and even causing an accident involving a schoolgirl on her motorcycle.

“I am happy to hear it has been fixed,” said local ward councillor Yolanda Duvenage.

“After the first article appeared in the [Rekord] newspaper, I forwarded it to the relevant department. I have, however, not been to the street to see for myself whether it has been fixed.”

Resident Erika Moolman said on Tuesday: “I drove past there again yesterday when I noticed the speed bump was removed.”

Moolman initially contacted Rekord after she reportedly damaged her vehicle twice at the street more than a week ago.

She said the speed bump was originally a “deep” ditch dug before it was filled up with dirt to make a speed bump.

Moolman said her car was scratched the first time because the ditch covered with water and it was not apparent how deep it was.

“I think it was dug by contractors,” Moolman told Rekord.

A few days later, the ditch was turned into an unmarked speed hump, which damaged her car again when she drove over it.

On 10 July, a schoolgirl driving a motorcycle was injured when she drove over the unmarked speed bump.
