However, the man has accused the police of assault and abuse.
He alleged in his affidavit that on 23 May 2019, the investigating officer took him out of Mamelodi East police station to identify his accomplices but instead he was assaulted by the police and when he asked to be taken to hospital for his injuries, this was denied.
The 18 students and professors were on an outreach visit to the area when they were robbed of their valuables including laptops, return flight tickets, cameras, bags, passports, cellphones and cash in US currency by five men who then fled in a Toyota Quantum.
It was alleged, a teacher had been pistol-whipped and a resident was struck by a stray bullet in the hand during the robbery.
A vehicle linked to the robbery was discovered at a car wash in Phase 3 Mamelodi East, while the man was arrested at Pienaarspoort informal settlement in the far east of Mamelodi.
