West’s good Samaritans help deliver a baby

"The taxi driver just stopped right there and simply dropped her off by the side of the road."

A handful of good Samaritans from the west of Pretoria teamed up this week to help a woman give birth by the side of the road.

The incident happened in Pretoria Street, Hercules on Wednesday morning, said Hercules CPF spokesperson Ricky Louw.

“The mom was driving in a taxi when she went into labour,” she said.

“The taxi driver simply stopped right there and dropped her off next to the side of the road.”

Fortunately,  sector 4 CPF member Edna van Vuuren and a team rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call.

“I was working when I heard my phone go crazy with a stream of WhatsApp notifications coming through,” Van Vuuren said.

“When I read that a woman was in labour in public and I just thought how horrible it must be because there was no  privacy for her at all.”

Van Vuuren then sped to the scene.

She said when they arrived at the scene, the woman was already very advanced in her labour.

“By that time, there was no chance of arranging an ambulance or transport to the hospital,” she said.

“We had to do what we could with what we had, which was just a medical bag.”

Right there on the side of the road, the group brought a healthy baby Angelina into the world.

Van Vuuren said the mother and her baby were then taken to Pretoria West hospital.

“It was not just a privilege to be part of the whole process, but also a privilege to be able to help,” she said.

“Special thanks to Netcare 911, members Jean Barnard and Boet Truter.”
