“Neglected” sinkhole continues to irk Valhalla residents

“We miss appointments, our children are late for school and we are becoming frustrated.”

An apparent neglected sinkhole in Centurion continues to inconvenience residents with no solution in sight.

Formed due to heavy rainfall in March last year, the sinkhole on Stephanus Schoeman Road towards the R55 has resulted in the closure of the road used by residents to go to Laudium.

Shereen Tayob, who previously highlighted the struggles of the residents, has again raised her voice over the situation.

Tayob, a home business owner in Valhalla, said her business was suffering because of the time it took her customers to make their way to her.

“The sinkhole has still not been sorted out and the formation of another sinkhole in Alaric Road last year has also made things worse,” she said.

“My clients don’t want to visit my business anymore because it is such a hassle.”

Tayob said a simple trip of ten minutes was now a nightmare detour through Valhalla.

“This is affecting between 30 and 40% of the residents in the area.”

“We miss appointments, our children are late for school and we are becoming frustrated.”

Local ward councillor Ina Strijdom previously said the repair of the sinkhole was the responsibility of the department of public works.

The Tshwane metro earlier this month confirmed there were 29 sinkholes on its priority list, 26 of which are in Centurion.

“The metro will repair these as per the sinkhole prioritisation process,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

Mashigo said the metro was currently upgrading “wet infrastructure” in the area to minimise occurrences of leaks and damage.

The department of public works had not commented at the time of publication.
