NEWSFLASH: Hot-air balloon crash-lands in Soshanguve

“Once stabilised, the patients were transported by ambulance to a hospital for assessment.”

Two people were injured when a hot-air balloon crash-landed north of Pretoria.

The incident happened near the M44 in Soshanguve around 09:30 on Saturday morning, Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst told Rekord.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the hot-air balloon landed in a veld next to a bus depot off the M44,” he said.

Herbst said that when paramedics assessed the scene, they found two people who had sustained relatively minor injuries and were in a stable condition.

“Once stabilised, the patients were transported by ambulance to a hospital for assessment,” he said.

It was still unclear what caused the accident.

An eyewitness to the incident, Pierre Bezuidenhout, said he and a friend, Jan Brouwer, were fishing at Kommandonek in Hartbeespoort when they saw three hot-air balloons take off.

“The wind was really bad at the time,” Bezuidenhout said.

“We could clearly see that two of the balloons would not make it – we regularly fish at Kommandonek and often see the hot-air balloons, so we have an estimated idea of where they are supposed to land.”
