GALLERY: Moon landing anniversary inspires art exhibition in the east

“We are so proud of all our artists. We really did not expect the magnitude of people attending today.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Art.co.za and The Viewing Room Art Gallery as part of the St. Lorient Fashion and Art Gallery in Brooklyn presented a group of talented artists exhibiting artworks exploring mankind’s infatuation with the moon and stars.

“We are so proud of all our artists. We really did not expect the magnitude of people attending today.

“What a success. It goes to show how art pieces about such a historic event can bring a diverse group of people together,” says Lucy Anastasiadis, founder and owner of the gallery.

The exhibition officially opened on Saturday, 20 July 2019 (the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon 50 years ago) and will run until 7 September 2019.

Guests were treated to wine, canapés and lots of interesting company.

The exhibition was opened and guests welcomed by Roger Deane, who is a South African radio astronomer, associate professor and head of the astronomy research group at the University of Pretoria.

Deane was part of an international team of scientists who captured the first images of the now infamous black hole that were released earlier this year.

“There are approximately 60 artists exhibiting, like Carl Jeppe and Rogerio de Andrade among many others,” Anastasiadis said.

Pretorians are welcome to join in the astronomy fun at The Viewing Room Art Gallery on Mondays to Fridays from 09:00 – 14:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 – 14:00.
