Sixty-seven cats and dogs from the Wollies animal shelter from Pretoria North was taken to the Lyttelton Animal Hospital on Thursday where the animals were sterilized free of charge.

Resident Mariette de Jager recently visited her local veterinarians, Dr. Frans Pretorius at the animal hospital when the two of them came up with sterilizing animals for Mandela day.

Four veterinarians took up the task of sterilising the animals.

De Jager, who actively supports various shelters around Pretoria, said she decided to involve Wollies with the initiative as the shelter really needed help.

“There is 500 dogs at Wollies. Recently the shelter went a whole day without food due to the lack of donations,” De Jager said.

She and her friends also donated 67 bags of dog and cat food to Wollies animal shelter on the day.

They manned the Wollies van and assisted with the animals who came in for the operation on the day.
