Bakkie crashes into The Reeds property
“Quite a few of my neighbours have the same problem.”
A resident of The Reeds will have to fork out thousands of rands to repair his wall after a bakkie smashed into it on Saturday evening.
Sebata Motau, who lives in Bedford Street, was watching television at around 18:00 with his family when he heard a loud crash.
“At first I thought perhaps my wife had perhaps forgotten to pull up the handbrake on my own vehicle,” said Motau.
“Then we realised that it was a man in a bakkie who had missed the sharp bend outside our home and driven straight into our wall.”
Motau said he would now have to pay as much as R15 000 to repair the section of the wall which was damaged.
He believes the fault lies with the lack of signs to warn motorists that a sharp bend was ahead.
“Quite a few of my neighbours have the same problem.”
Motau claimed that as many as four similar accidents at other properties happened over the past few months because of motorists speeding in Bedford Street.
“There is also a sharp bend coming into Bedford Street from Panorama Road,” he said.
“We feel having new speed bumps and proper road warning signs will help considerably.”
Local ward councillor Casper McDonald said speed bumps would not work at this particular road as they “don’t stop reckless and negligent driving”.
“Motorists will speed right to the bump, brake hard to go over it and then speed on,” said McDonald.
“Motorists’ attitudes regarding speeding must be changed.”
