UPDATE: No hope yet for Eersterust bowls field

This follows after there have been several attempts to repurpose the property.

There are no plans for an old sports field in the Moot, said the Tshwane metro.

This follows after several attempts to repurposed an old bowling green in Eersterust, the metro said.

The property, on the corner of PS Fourie Avenue and Dove Crescent, belongs to the metro and has not been in use since 1998.

“The latest attempt was to turn it into a five-a-side soccer facility,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“Due to the fact that the ablution facilities have been vandalised and some items ripped off by unknown persons, this was never realised.”

Mashigo said the facility has also not been used for quite some time as there was a lack of interest in the sport.

“The metro is currently carrying out general maintenance, which includes grass-cutting,” he said.

“Any other maintenance efforts have proven to be fruitless due to continued vandalism and theft.”

He said the security concerns have been escalated to the Tshwane metro police for intervention.

There are several similar properties in Eersterust, according to community activist Novina Pillay.

“It is always the same old story,” she said.

“The property is left empty and then it is stripped by criminals.”

Pillay also mentioned the old community hall in Hans Coverdale Road and several other ablution buildings on properties in the area.
