Young scouts pledge to serve and protect
The aim of the scouts is to develop children to leaders in the community.
Thirty scouts from Mamelodi pledged to adhere to the scout promise and law on Saturday.
They pledged at the investiture ceremony enrolment at the Zakhele Primary School.
The boys and girls are now full members of the Seventh Mamelodi Scout group.
Scout group leader of Mamelodi, Solomon Bra Solly Kutumela, said the aim of the scouts is to develop children to be leaders in the community.
“To lead by example, we teach them discipline and to know their duty to others and responsibility within society, family, country and the world at large; as well as respect for others and for the natural world,” said Kutumela.
He said a scout could choose to specialise in fields such as first aid, camping and hiking.
The scouts from age 7 to 10 were called cubs, 11 to 18 scouts and 18 to 30 rovers.

The new scouts pledged as follows: “On my honour, I promise that I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country. To help other people at all times; To obey the Scout Law.”
New scout Phuti Seabela (11) from Mamelodi East said he was excited and could not wait to be enrolled.
Though he was a bit nervous about the pledge, he made it.
He further said being a scout will keep him grounded and away from the streets.
He advised other local children to start doing something about their lives and recommended they join the scouts.
“A scout’s honour is to be trusted. A scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other scout,” Seabela said.
He said he will honour the scout promise forever and advised the youth of Mamelodi to stay away from doing drugs.
Kutumela said the Seventh Mamelodi Scout group was founded in the early 1960s.
Anyone who wished to join the group can contact Bra Solly on 065-969-5010.
