What Pretoria taxpayers need to know about 2026 filing season
With filing dates now confirmed, residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the process before submissions open next month.
Pretoria residents who submit tax returns will soon be entering the 2026 tax filing season, with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) confirming key dates for taxpayers across the country.
The process begins with the auto-assessment period from July 1 to July 12. During this time, SARS automatically does the filing, using information it receives from employers, banks, medical schemes, retirement funds and insurers.
Taxpayers who are selected for auto-assessment receive an SMS or email notification and can review the outcome on eFiling or the SARS MobiApp.
Taxpayers who receive an auto-assessment are encouraged to review the information carefully before accepting it. While the process is designed to make tax administration easier, taxpayers should still check that all their information is included.
Missing income from sources such as rental property, investment earnings or other additional income, as well as deductions not reflected on SARS records, could affect a refund or result in additional tax being owed.
Some Pretoria residents shared mixed experiences with the tax filing process, particularly around SARS’ digital platforms.
“I haven’t really encountered any challenges. However, I think SARS could improve their app. Sometimes when I try to check something in the app, I struggle,” said Liver Ntshani.
“I haven’t encountered any problems. The only issue is that I can’t link my business or company to eFiling. If I was able to link my company for eFiling remotely, instead of going to SARS offices, it would be much easier,” said Diapo Letsoalo.
The filing season for non-provisional taxpayers will run from July 13 to October 23. Provisional taxpayers and trusts will have until January 22, 2027, to submit their returns.

According to SARS, not every taxpayer is required to submit a return. However, residents are encouraged to check their tax status and ensure their records are up to date. Maintaining an accurate tax profile can help prevent administrative challenges and may be beneficial when applying for financial products or other services that require proof of tax compliance.
Taxpayers who disagree with an auto-assessment can update their tax return and submit corrected information through SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp before the filing deadline.
With the filing season approaching, taxpayers are encouraged to gather supporting documents such as IRP5 certificates from employers, medical aid certificates, retirement annuity contribution records, and any documents relating to interest or investment income.
Residents should also verify that their personal details and banking information on SARS systems are up to date before the submission period opens.
Taxpayers can file their returns through SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp. The process involves logging in, reviewing already filled-in information, updating any missing or incorrect details, uploading supporting documents if needed, and submitting the return for assessment. Assistance is available via SARS online support channels or at SARS branches for those who need help navigating the system.
