The event kicked off this Saturday at the Eduplex Sport pump track in Queenswood.

Enthusiasts from all over Pretoria gathered this Saturday for the Red Bull Pump Track world championships in Queenswood.

High spirits filled the day as attendees waited with anticipation to see who would go through to the world finals.

“It was a heavy day of racing, with riders powering through in the freezing cold African sun with roaring crowd support spurring them on through the final knockouts and super final,” said Maryke Zietsman of Velosolutions.

Georgina Grassie and Kane Herbert took the podium in the women and men divisions, respectively, to secure their spots in the world finals.

“Herbert from Johannesburg and Grassie from Durban were both there to defend their South African titles and did so in a few close calls during the day’s racing action,” Zietsman said.

“But with sheer grit and determination managed to both take the podium again and secure their place in Switzerland later this year.”

South Africa introduced the first national series this year, said Zietsman.

Earlier this month, Chesterville in Durban hosted a prequalifier on 14 July, with the second prequalifier and super finals taking place this weekend at Eduplex.

“The ultimate winner in the male and female category will travel to the world final to represent South Africa in Switzerland,” she said.

The Red Bull Pump Track World Championship is a global event in partnership with Velosolutions.

“The championship has already succeeded in creating a revolutionary global series with over 23 ground-breaking inaugural events around the world in 2018,” Zietsman said.

“More than 2 000 athletes participated in over 19 countries and 67 riders competed in that year’s world final which saw local heroes, Olympic BMX racers and MTB World Champions compete on an even playing field.”

She said in 2019, the series, which started in February, returned with more athletes and more Pump Action.

The championship would continue until September.

The Eduplex pump track is the first South African Velosolutions Pump Track and stretches over 211m in length.
