Centurion helpline for kids in need
Messages will also be shared with participating security companies and the relevant SAPS station’s chosen contact person.
A Centurion charity wants to open a helpline for vulnerable local children.
Founder of Toys for Africa non-profit Danie van Loggerenberg said the helpline number would be given to all schools in the area from pre-to high school.
He said the aim was to create an alternative to existing emergency numbers which children can access via WhatsApp or SMS.
“During our child protection week initiative, we engage with a number of schools and teachers around Centurion,” said Van Loggerenberg.
“Many schools are struggling with issues such as bullying, drugs, domestic violence and abuse.”

He said children couldn’t often access emergency numbers but were very familiar with WhatsApp.
“With our helpline the child will only have to send a message to the number stating their problem,” he said.
“An automated response will ask for more details including the school’s name.”
Van Loggerenberg said in such instances the organisation can send the police to engage with the school.
“In case of a false alarm, this can be determined quickly but if, for example, a child is really struggling with bullying then we can rectify the situation quickly.”
Messages will also be shared with participating security companies and the relevant SAPS station’s chosen contact person.
The helpline will also put children into contact with a number of services including emergency services, schools, social workers from all the relevant organisations and will later also include doctors and psychologists.
“It will be launched at the start of September after it has been properly tested,” said Van Loggerenberg.
“Once the system has been tested and launched the number will be made available.”
