Tyger Valley College Head Girl, Rachel van Zyl, entered the National Ubuntu Art Competition where she came second.
It was a very a close competition, with the winner beating Rachel by only 2% (there was a 11.5% difference between 2nd and 3rd place).
Possibly, the highlight of the prize-giving for Rachel was meeting education minister Angie Motshekga, as well as a request by the organisers for Rachel to donate her artwork to the minister, which she did.
Motshekga asked Rachel to sign the artwork and said that it would be framed and placed in her office.
The name of Rachel’s artwork is ‘We Remember’ and was done in pencil with mixed media elements such as colourful beads. She chose the image of a young Nelson Mandela as the main focal point because “he was a leader who put the principles of Ubuntu into practice, even during the struggle in South Africa”.
The beads around his neck provide texture and contain at least one colour of every flag in the world, which symbolizes that the world needs everyone in it, just like Ndebele necklaces need every bead.
The children framing Nelson Mandela are of different races and are joined by the string of beads underneath them, which represents unity among society.
“In my artwork, the children have their faces facing down to portray humility and to show respect to the late Nelson Mandela.”
