East man sentenced to 12 years

Given Mvhango Skhosana from Mamelodi West Section C2 was sentenced to 12 years on 23 July by the Pretoria Regional Court.

The Mamelodi police have welcomed the sentence handed down to a man who hit a pedestrian with a stolen car while fleeing the son of the owner.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said Given Mvhango Skhosana of Mamelodi West Section C2 was sentenced to 12 years on 23 July in the Pretoria Regional Court for housebreaking, theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving and hitting a pedestrian.

He said on 29 September 2018, Skhosana had gained access into a house by breaking a window then stole a TV and two cameras to the value of R50 000, which he loaded into the homeowner’s Corsa bakkie he found in the yard.

Maheso said the car owner’s son had tracked bakkie to the Mamelodi West hostel two days later.

He said the car’s number plates had already been removed.

“When he approached, the suspected thief sped off resulting in him running a pedestrian over,” said Maheso adding that the thief had then abandoned the car to take his chances on foot.

“Locals joined his pursuit and apprehended the thief.

Maheso praised the investigating officer for “working tirelessly to make sure that justice prevails”.

“He made sure that Skhosana, who was out on parole, did not get bail as well as involving the public to come to court,” said Maheso.

“The officer gained the trust of the community by convincing them to testify against him.”

Maheso encouraged the public to continue working with the police in the fight against crime in their community.
