Car batteries stolen from Pta cars

The growing use of a remote jamming device to block or jam the locking mechanism of motor vehicles has unfortunately become an everyday occurrence, ADT said.

A local security firm warned there has been an uptick in car batteries being stolen from parked motor vehicles.

“Residents must make sure their vehicles are locked at all times when parked at shopping malls, schools, businesses – even at home,” said Fidelity ADT district manager Leon Muller.

“The growing use of a remote jamming device to block or jam the locking mechanism of motor vehicles has unfortunately become an everyday occurrence.

“Always check that the car is locked by checking the door. Don’t assume that by pressing the remote that your car is locked,” he said.

This follows police reports last year of spare wheels and other valuables being stolen from vehicles, especially in the Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Sunnyside, Villieria, Pretoria Moot, Silverton and Lyttelton areas.

“Motorists should ensure that they do not leave any valuables in their vehicles if they park on sidewalks. It’s especially important not to leave any valuable items inside the car where they can be seen. Rather lock these items in the boot,” he said.

He said residents should report any suspicious activity to the SAPS or security firm in the area.
