Food bowls run empty at Wollies
The furry friends at the Wollies animal shelter are in dire need of donations.
A beloved animal shelter in the north of Pretoria needs the community to help it keep the animals’ bowls full.
“It has been very difficult at Wollies the past two months. We don’t have food. It is really not going well with us financially,” founder Cilla Trexler said.
There are currently 670 dogs, 400 cats, three donkeys and rabbits at the animal shelter.
The dogs eat up to five municipal bins of food per day and the cats two.

Wollies also supplies less fortunate families in the area with pet food.
The shelter is solely dependent on donations from the community and organisations as it does not receive any funding from the government.
Besides the dire need for food donations, Wollies also needs help with re-fencing its dog kennels.
“When we started Wollies, we built the kennels with old wire which was donated. We can’t afford to buy new wire. Currently the wire is rusted and stretched out and breaks easily when the dog bite it. It is in such a bad condition that it easily breaks when you pull it. The wire also has holes.
“Today you see one hole, tomorrow there are many more. The wire is a risk for dogs. Our staff on the premises sleep in between the dog kennels in case fighting breaks out at night. The wire is a critical problem. Although we patch the holes, there are too many to fix.”
Wollies will need 10 to 20 rolls of about 30 metres each to rewire the kennels.

Trexler says without the community, Wollies would not exist or be able to operate.
“Thank you to the public for all the food donations and the amazing support. Thank you to every person, school and organisation, for each bag or bags of food and everyone who visits Wollies. Without the public’s support, Wollies cannot exist.”
