Recently, Abbotts College Centurion hosted their fifth annual “Oscars @ Abbotts” under the theme,“absurd.”
The night kicked off with the Grade 11s movies, in which each student could interpret and present the theme as they saw fit. The standard of the movies, in terms of creativity and technical skills, was exceptionally high this year, but in the end there could only be one winner: Thando Khumalo walked away with the Oscar for the best movie of 2019.

Then came the time for the Grade 12s to display their acting skills. They presented various monologues and scenes, which they had to perform for their final drama practical exam and, judging by the audience reaction, they did a very good job. The Grade 12s performed two self-written Absurd Theatre one-act pieces, Jabu and Thabo by Lizwakele Hadebe and Bobby Putuzo while Keitumetse Notoane and Dineo Mamabolo presented Two rich broke girls.

The adjudicator for the evening Ms Retha Kearns, a senior marker for the final Drama practical exams, was not only “amazed” by their acting talent, but also by their understanding of and engagement with the Absurd genre.
