Crime decreases ‘drastically’ in Kameeldrift
An average of 15 crime incidents a month decreased to only two recently.
Crime in the Kameeldrift area has dropped over the past few months, thanks to the AfriForum Kameeldrift neighbourhood watch.
The watch said the number of crimes had dropped from 15 per month to only two recently.
“The neighbourhood watch actively started patrolling the area to create awareness,” said AfriForum district coordinator for the greater Pretoria Jaco Grobbelaar.
The crime stats in the Roodeplaat area north of Pretoria indicate an average of 15 incidents per month was reported from January to March, but this fell to two in April.

AfriForum neighbourhood watch coordinator Conrad Meyer said the patrollers had collected information such as when the crimes took place then started patrolling according to that information.
“This manner of working has caused the crime stats in this area to drop significantly,” Meyer said.
Meyer further said the decrease was due to “successful planning and adjustments” to disrupt criminals when they are active in the area.

“The neighbourhood watch has changed our patrols to adapt to the information we have gathered. We also started to patrol more and also to involve the community in the awareness actions. Effective communication between the neighbourhood watch and residents has also helped reduce crime and discourage criminals from entering the area.”
Grobbelaar said good cooperation between different structures is crucial in fighting crime.

“Successes like these are driven by collaboration between the SAPS, the community and private security companies, as well as effective communication. This neighbourhood watch sets a good example of the success that can be achieved if the community stands together and uses information effectively,” Grobbelaar concluded.
