Rassie earns Proteas contract

The Pretoria player has been on form since making his Proteas ODI debut earlier this year.

Following a successful 2018/19 cricket season, Pretoria-born Rassie van der Dussen has finally been awarded a national contract. Although he made his one day international (ODI) debut this year, the 30-year-old top order batsman was one of a few top performers for the Proteas at this year’s ICC World Cup in England

He now becomes the 17th Standard Bank Protea on a national contract taking the spot left vacant following Duanne Olivier’s decision to go the Kolpak route. Before earning a Proteas cap, van der Dussen was awarded the Mzansi Super League Impact Player of the Year after helping the Jozi Stars to win the inaugural title.

During the Cricket SA awards, the former Menlo Park Hoerskool pupil scooped the International Newcomer of the Year prize after an outstanding average of 73 and strike rate of 81 percent and 133 percent for ODIs and T20 Internationals respectively in his debut season.

“Rassie’s promotion is thoroughly justified on the back of a brilliant debut season at international level and has also served as an inspiration to all aspiring cricketers at domestic level of what can be achieved by showing top-class form on a consistent basis,” said CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe.

“I am also happy to announce that Sinalo Jafta is currently one point away from a similar upgrade among our women players. Should she be selected for their upcoming tour of India and play in at least one match she will qualify for a full 12-month contract.”

CSA has also announced the squad plus the coaches and technical staff for the spin bowling camp in Bangaluru, India from August 17 to 23.

It includes members of both the South Africa A and Standard Bank Proteas squads ahead of their respective tours to India.

“We have identified Aiden Markram, Zubayr Hamza and Temba Bavuma as key Proteas batsmen to benefit from this project and we have also included some of our potential stars of the future such as Janneman Malan and Sinethemba Qeshile, who have already both played for the Proteas, as well as Matthew Breetzke.”
