Boschkop police investigate deadly shootout following Tyger Valley armed robbery

A suspected armed robber who was allegedly out on bail for a 2024 business robbery was shot and killed during a shootout with private security following an armed robbery in Tyger Valley.

Police are investigating cases of house robbery, attempted murder and murder following a shootout between private security and suspects on August 19 at about 05:00.

The shootout follows after three armed suspects allegedly entered a smallholding and robbed farm workers living on the premises.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said Echo-1 security was alerted to the incident and used a drone to track the suspects as they fled towards the R104 and Mooiplaats gravel road in the direction of the Skierlik informal settlement.

“The security company intercepted the suspects along the Mooiplaats gravel road. The suspects allegedly opened fire on a security officer and a shootout ensued between the suspects and security officers,” Van Dyk said.

One suspect was arrested and found in possession of a firearm, while a second suspect escaped.

The third suspect continued exchanging gunfire with security officers and was fatally wounded during the confrontation.

“Boschkop police officers were contacted and arrived within minutes to assist with the arrest, secure and process the scene,” Van Dyk said.

He said a firearm was recovered from the deceased suspect, while another firearm was recovered after the arrested suspect allegedly dropped it.

The injured security officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

“Police investigations are also continuing to determine whether the suspects can be linked to other criminal activities,” Van Dyk said.

Police are also working to trace the suspect at large.

Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Kushie Pietersen commended the police and security personnel, highlighting the importance of co-operation between SAPS and private security stakeholders.

Echo-1 said the incident was reported shortly after 03:00 when a client activated a panic alarm after a neighbouring property was robbed. Officers responded and deployed a drone, which tracked three suspects towards the N4.

The company said one suspect was arrested after a tactical takedown and found in possession of a firearm. The remaining suspects fled towards nearby informal settlements, where an officer was allegedly ambushed and shot before one suspect was killed in the ensuing shootout.

Echo-1 claimed the suspects were linked to a December 2024 Boschkop business robbery and were out on bail at the time of the incident. The company thanked all roleplayers involved.
